Coloured Overlay Testing

If you find that words blur, flash or move around on a page when reading, you may have Meares-Irlen Syndrome. This is a visual- perceptual disorder also known as Irlen Syndrome, Scotopic Sensitivity or Visual Stress.

A test using coloured acetate overlays can identity the likelihood of Visual Stress. .

Who benefits from a coloured overlay test?

Children and adults who feel they may have experienced:

  • Difficulty tracking text when reading
  • Letters being blurry on the page
  • Slow reading speed
  • Satisfactory reading but difficulty with reading comprehension

What will the test tell me?

The test establishes the correct colour to use and gives an indication as to whether further assessment by an optometrist is required.

What will happen on the day?

You will meet with a specialist teacher who will discuss your current situation and answer any questions you have regarding the use of colour. They will guide you through the testing process, explain the results and talk about any further action required.

What happens after the test?

Everyone is unique. The adviser will take this into account when working with you and will advise on the best course of action. Overlays are available to purchase if required.

How long are appointments and where are they held?

The appointment lasts up to an hour. Appointments take place at the Indigo Dyslexia Centre.

How much does it cost?

£35.00 (inc. VAT) per person. This price includes an overlay if required.
