Specialist Teacher Assessments

Who benefits from a specialist teacher assessment?

If your child has had a screening test, you may wish to pursue further evidence and assessment. This type of assessment provides a framework for learning support at home and at school. An assessment by a apecialist teacher is used to identify dyslexia for a variety of different purposes. You may:

  • Be a parent who is concerned about your child’s progress at school and wanting an independent assessment of their current attainment
  • Have concerns that you or your child have dyslexia and require an assessment that offers a diagnosis with a recommended teaching programme
  • Require evidence of a Specific Learning Difficulty (eg: dyslexia) for Exam Access Arrangements (extra time, readers, writers, separate room etc) at SATS, GCSE, A Level and Further Education

If you are unsure whether you need a Specialist Teacher Assessment, please call Indigo on 0845 347 9322 to discuss your options.

What will the assessment tell me?

The assessment will identify strengths and areas for development in relation to the difficulties you or your child are experiencing. It will also identify ways in which you could be helped to overcome those difficulties.

What will happen on the day?

You will meet confidentially with a teacher who specialises in dyslexia at the Indigo Dyslexia Centre in Norwich. The specialist teacher will assess your reading (speed, accuracy and comprehension), spelling and writing and, if necessary, your numerical skills. You will also undertake an assessment of your problem-solving and cognitive skills.

What happens after the assessment?

The specialist teacher will write you a detailed report with results and recommendations. You will receive your report in the post, within two weeks. This will also include an invitation to come back to the centre to discuss the report and what the findings might mean for you.

How long does an assessment take and where is it held?

Assessments vary in length depending on the complexity of needs and the purpose of the assessment, but two to two-and-a-half hours is the norm. They take place at the Indigo Dyslexia Centre.

How much does it cost?

A specialist teacher assessment costs £296 (inc. VAT).
